Twisted and unpredictable was how my high-school English teacher described my writing to my worried parents when I was thirteen. Aware that the stories I wrote weren’t like the other kids’, my teacher was concerned that my overactive imagination was being fueled by access to inappropriate material. Thankfully my parents didn’t pay much attention and allowed me to continue reading Stephen King, Tom Clancy, Thomas Harris, Alexander Dumas and all the other great authors I grew up with.

After graduating, I tried my hand at a conventional career, but couldn’t ignore the persistent force pulling at me. One day I ran away with my imagination and we’ve never looked back. Daunted by my literary heroes, I started writing screenplays and comic books, but in 2009, I finally faced the challenge of writing a novel: Battalion. Completed in exactly 30 days, the book attracted interest from a major publisher, who ultimately passed, so I self-published and received a broadly positive reaction. Encouraged, I wrote Out of Reach in 2012, and self-published. The book was well-received and was picked up by a small London publisher, Endeavour Press.

I started work on Pendulum in 2014, but was commissioned to adapt David Mitchell’s moving novel, Number9dream, when I was only half way through. Rather than sit on Pendulum, my agent submitted the first half to publishers at the 2015 London Book Fair, and we had our first expression of interest from a major publisher in under a week. Further interest followed, and, after a competitive process, in what was a huge vote of confidence, Headline purchased the incomplete Pendulum as the first in a three-book trilogy.

Pendulum will be published in November 2016. I’m pleased to say that it’s twisted and unpredictable.
